More about Topps

75 years ago, a Brooklyn family began a business dealing in chewing gum. Morris Shorin was a struggling entrepreneur with a tobacco distribution business in 1938. It was his sons, Abram, Joseph, Ira, and Philip who revived the business with the creation of Topps Chewing Gum, where they sold gum for a penny. They called their gum the Change Makers and chose the name Topps mainly because they wanted to be on top.

In 1947, Topps created a pink bubble gum pad that became the iconic Bazooka Bubble Gum that we know today. Wrapping the gum in comics featuring Bazooka Joe, they set the standard for combining entertainment and gum. Two years later, Topps introduced their Magic Photo Cards, where pictures appeared as if by magic, when the cards were moistened and then exposed to light. Gum chewers were excited to reveal photos of sports stars such as Babe Ruth, Cy Young, and Rogers Hornsby.

It was in 1951, that Topps really made its mark in the sports industry by revealing a line of baseball cards that included a picture of the athletes with a bio and at-bat stats. Inside the card package was a piece of taffy, and kids could collect these cards, play a game of baseball cards, and trade them. And by 1954, Topps introduced a line of national hockey league cards becoming a leader in the candy making business, and a leader in the sports card game industry.
